Always on the lookout for unique things to do in Los Angeles, I jumped at the chance to attend an afternoon at the Greystone Mansion’s Concours d’Elegance. I’m not specifically a car person, but the stunning colors and curves of the collection showcased this year got me very excited. Weird, I know.
Located at the Greystone Estate in Beverly Hills, the annual Concours d’Elegance continues to be one of the most exclusive showcases of historic and classic vehicles in the United States. As an artist I find myself captivated by the designs of these cars and I really enjoy photographing them. This year the concours attracted over over 2,000 people looking forward to seeing this collection, strolling the beautiful estate and making new friends at what is clearly a major social event for car collectors and enthusiasts.
Automotive Design at its Best
The rare automobiles that come together at Greystone epitomize the beauty of automotive design at its absolute best. Present this year were 132 vintage cars and 20 rare motorcycles, including some very special cars I’ll never see again in my life. For example, a one-of-one special body 1959 Ferrari 250 SWB Bertone and a 1956 Corvette SR2 race car, each worth about seven million dollars. A total of 30 awards were given in five categories ranging from Best of Class to Best of Show. From the vintage Ferraris, Jaguars, Duesenburgs, Delahayes, Maseratis, Bentleys and Rolls Royces, the immaculate quality and luxury is unmistakable. All this fancy has gotten to my head, can you tell?
The Greystone Mansion
The mansion, which occupies a sprawling 46,000 square feet, is just a few years short of its 100th birthday. Numerous Hollywood films have been shot here including The Big Lebowski, There Will Be Blood, Disney’s The Muppets and Star Trek Into Darkness, to name a few. An organization known as The Friends of Greystone are dedicated to restoring it back to its original splendor of the 1920s. Throughout the home were photographs on display showing what each room looked like in the 1940s. To me, it was a little haunting to step through an old Hollywood home in this intimate setting.
The grounds were vibrant and perfectly manicured. It seemed as though there was an area to relax around every corner. Their cocktail sponsors offered multiple open bars, while attendees enjoyed a lovely buffet lunch. It is something special to relax with a drink and enjoy the panoramic view of Beverly Hills and beyond.
